Chronic Glaucoma Glaucoma Blindness

Chronic glaucoma and glaucoma blindness

Glaucoma is an eye disease related to the abnormal increase of fluid pressure that is inside the eyeball. This abnormal pressure results in a progressive and usually painless and irreversible damage to vision. There are a range of treatment that can counteract the disease progression and thus prevent the progressive loss of vision that can lead to blindness. Glaucoma threatens the vision as the disease evolves painless causing progressive loss of field of vision without affecting the early central visual acuity. As the disease is painless and that the loss of vision is not evident early, glaucoma is usually diagnosed by an ophthalmologist during routine inspections conducted at the waning of prescription glasses. Thus, in the absence of consideration, the disease can long remain unknown.

Chronic glaucoma general precautions

  • Avoid the use of certain medications - particularly as corticosteroid eye drops - or take account of potential risks.
  • Having a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to fill as much as possible the needs of vitamins and minerals.
  • Drink small quantities of liquids.
  • Limit or avoid consumption of caffeine.
  • Exercising regularly can alleviate some symptoms of open angle glaucoma, but has no effect on the angle closure. It is best to consult a doctor to choose the appropriate exercises. Beware of certain yoga postures or exercises with the head down, which can increase pressure in the eye.
  • In the sun, protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays by wearing sunglasses.

Preventing another crisis of angle closure glaucoma

  • Stress can trigger an acute attack of angle closure glaucoma. Pay attention to factors that generate stress and try to find solutions.
  • Laser treatment will help prevent a recurrence. This treatment is to make a small hole in the iris with a laser beam to allow the flow of aqueous humor. Mostly, it is advisable to treat the other eye as a preventive measure.

Congenital glaucoma

Some babies are born with an abnormality of roads and drainage of aqueous humor. The vision can be surgically preserved by allowing the evacuation of aqueous humor.

Secondary glaucoma

Trauma, certain drugs, some diseases, eye inflammation and other factors may reduce the drainage of aqueous humor.
