Glaucoma eye drops


        The drops are frequently prescribed because they cause fewer side effects than medications taken by mouth. Several types of eye drops are used. Among the most common are beta-blockers, alpha-adrenergic agents, prostaglandin analogues, inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase and miotics. The majority of these drugs act both by reducing production of aqueous humor in the eye and increasing its excretion. Side effects vary from one type to another drop. It may be, for example, a dry mouth, eye irritation, redness around the eyes or fatigue. It is advisable to inform your doctor about the side effects that occur.

People at risk

  • Individuals with a family history of glaucoma.
  • Persons aged 60 and over.
  • Americans of African descent are at greater risk of suffering from open angle glaucoma and blindness. Their risk increases from the age of 40 years. The Mexican Americans, Asians are also more at risk.
  • People with diabetes or hypothyroidism.
  • People who suffer from hypotension or hypertension, and those who already had heart disease.
  • People with other eye problems (pronounced myopia, cataracts, chronic uveitis, pseudoexfoliation, etc..).
  • People who have had a serious injury to one eye (a direct blow to the eye).

Glaucoma risk factors

  • The use of certain drugs, especially those containing corticosteroids (for open-angle glaucoma) or those that dilate the pupil (for angle closure glaucoma).
  • Regular consumption of coffee slightly increase the intraocular pressure.

Glaucoma basic preventive measures

        People with family histoy or diabetes are more susceptible to glaucoma. The review should be done every two or three years, from the forties or earlier if necessary. More rising intraocular pressure is detected, the sooner we minimize the loss of visual capabilities. Maintaining good cardiovascular health may also help prevent glaucoma. Finally, always make sure to protect your eyes with goggles during the practice of risky activities (handling chemicals, welding, squash, sports gear, etc..).
