Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma treatment

Unfortunately, there is no cure. The lost eyesight due to glaucoma can not be found. The goal of treatment is to prevent or slow the subsequent damage. In order to obtain this the intraocular pressure will be reduced by improving the flow of aqueous humor in the eye. The ophthalmologist develops a treatment plan and monitors visual abilities more carefully than usual. Possible interventions include eye drops, oral medication laser treatment and, if it is necessary, surgery. In many cases, the medication should be for life. If the cause of glaucoma is identifiable, it is important to treat it. Moreover, the corticosteroid administered in the eye are indicated in people who suffer from glaucoma.

Glaucoma treatment oral medication

If the drops do not sufficiently reduce intraocular pressure, which is rare, oral medication may be prescribed (eg, inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase). However, these drugs often cause side effects.

The closure glaucoma angle treatment

An iridotomy device is practised. To allow a better passage of aqueous humor from its place of production (ciliary body) in place of resorption (the trabecular meshwork) it creates a micro-hole at the periphery of the iris obscured by the upper eyelid. The radiation used is often supplemented with the laser heat. As trabeculoplasty, the eye is anesthetized with eye drops, it is done in a sitting position and placed a glass to keep your eyes open and focus the laser beam.

It offers the iridotomy in two circumstances. Preventively when the anatomy of the eye is such that it predisposes to the onset of the disease (iridocorneal angle close). When the disease is declared with an angle and partially closed intraocular pressure that exceeds the normal. In some rare forms of angle closure glaucoma there is a laser treatment to reshape the periphery of the IRS (iridoplastie).
